| Field notes | Solitary tree on steep slope near the road with remnants of forest. Stem ascending 5 m tall, 7 cm diam, near the base dark brown and longitudinally fissured, above light yellowish brown and smooth, internodes 2 - 4 cm long throughout. No crownshaft. Leaves 11, sheath encircling the trunk at base, split open all the way down, especially the sheaths of younger leaves; split up into a fibrous net, surrounding the leaves above, petiole bending away from the center and the leaves spreading, sheath and petiole 70 cm long, the petiole rounded below, flat above with a low rounded rim, margin between lower and upper surface sharp; rachis 175 cm long, rounded below, with two flat lateral sides on which the pinnae are inserted, the flat lateral sides separated by a flat part above in the lower 1/3 of the rachis, meeting to form a sharp ridge in the upper 2/3 of the rachis. Pinnae ca. 15 per side, unequally wide with 1 - 20 primary nerves each, lower pinna 35 x 4 cm, middle pinna 72 x 25 cm, upper pinnae 54 x 18 cm, all pinnae falcate, rachis terminating in a flagel. Inflorescences 7 inserted from 1 m below leaves to just below them, base swollen and encircling the stem half way around, peduncle 18 cm long, 3 x 1.5 cm thick; rachis 32 cm, rachillae 16, basal ones branched 2 times, 42 cm long to tip of flowering branches, upper rachillae simple 24 cm long, all flowering parts swollen with the flowers sunken in grooves. Immature inflorescence yellow, turning green and finally reddish, covered with a mealy indumentum. |
