| Field notes | Caespitose tree on a steep slope. Trunk 2.5 m tall, 6 - 7 cm thick, heavily armed with up to 10 cm long spines, dark brown. Leafsheath dark brown, heavily spined, the uppermost 25 cm bending away from trunk. Leaves 5 - 6, spreading. Petiole 38 cm long, rounded below, flat above, 1.5 cm thick; rims rounded. Whole petiole heavily spined. Rachis 152 cm long, heavily spined, rounded below, triangular above, with 2 lateral rims, and a rim at top . At base the top-rim is flat, O.5 cm broad. Pinnae with few long spines along middlevein, 16 per side, arranged in groups at 2 - 3 toge ther in one plane . Lower pinnae 30 - 35, middle 35, upper 24 cm long. Lower pinnae 5 cm broad, middle 10 cm, upper 6 - 7 cm, broadest at tip. Inflorescence one, inserted in the axil of an upper leaf, pointing upwards. Peduncle 110 cm long, 4 cm broad at base, 1.5 cm at top, with many spines up to 10 - 15 cm from joint to rachis. Upper spines erect, lower laying along the axis. Prophyll 30 cm long, bract 132 cm long, 2 cm broad at base, tapering. Rachis 90 cm long, with only short spines at base of rachillae. Rachillae 115, lowermost 70 cm long, getting shorter upwards, uppermost 5 cm, covered with short hair like spines. Rachis and rachillae reddish brown, spines on rachillae and upper-rachis olive-green. Flowers arranged in groups of 3, the 2 upper staminate the lower pistillate. |
