| Field notes | Solitary tree on steep slope. The base with a 60 cm high, 40 cm wide cone of stilroots, roots 40 -50, 4 -5 cm thick, brown with small spines. Trunk 8 m tall, 13 cm in diam. throughout, light brown, smooth, with small longitudinal cracks with many vascular ephytes. Leaves 4 -5; crownshaft ca. 80 cm enclosed in fibers from old leafsheats; petiole 15 cm, round, slightly laterally compressed, 3.5 x 4 cm, with brown tomentum; rachis 265 cm long rounded below, with two flat sides above with a keel where they meet; pinnae 31 per side, basal pinna 21 x 5 cm, middle pinna 100 x 15 cm, top pinna 32 x 7 cm, the pinnae arranged in one plane, basal side straight, top side irregularly dentate. Inflorescences many per node, male inflorescence: peduncle 28 x 2 cm with 5 sterile bracts, prophyll 5 x 2.5 cm, bicarinate; lowest sterile bract 10 x 2.5 cm, largest sterile bract 30 x 11 cm, rachis 11 cm, rachillae 8, 25 cm long, male flowers densely inserted along rachillae, female inflorescence: peduncle 36 cm, with 5 sterile bracts, prophyll 8 x 6 cm, next sterile bract 13 x 6 cm, largest sterile bract 41 x 10 cm, rachis 20 cm, rachillae 11 -65 cm long with young fruits inserted along the entire length. Old wilted infrutescence with rachillae to 115 cm long. |
