Field notes Stem solitary, erect, 28 m tall, 42 cm diam at base, 38 cm diam at apex, smooth; internodes very short at apex. Leaves 15, costapalmate, spreading, with ring of old persistent leaf-sheath under crown; sheath 3.2 m long, 40 cm wide at base, 8 cm wide at apex, rounded below and green with glaucous covering, above deeply grooved and brown; petiole 10 cm long, 8 cm wide, rounded to slightly triangular; blade with 200 segments, fused for 20 cm at base of costa and 60 cm at apex of costa; segments at apex 260 cm long, at base 2 m long, glossy green above, dark green below, acuminate at tips; costa 1 m long. Male inflorescence interfoliar, laterally exserted; peduncle 70 cm long, 10 cm wide, 6 cm thick, oval in cross-section, covered with sheathing bracts 16 cm long, brown; rachis 190 cm long, oval in cross-section, covered with brown sheathing bracts; rachillae distichously arranged and exserted from rachis bract, 90 cm proximally, 50 cm apically, covered by brown sheathing bracts, proximal rachillae with 55 bracts, each with short male spike, apical rachillae with 35 bracts and spikes; spikes densely covered with pits.
