| Field notes | Stems caespitose, erect, loosely clustered, 8 m tall, 3-4.5 cm diam., internodes 20 cm long with 6 cm spines inserted on upper part, these pointing down, black; nodes lighter brown than brown internodes. Leaves 3-5, paripinnate, spreading; sheath 35 cm long, closed for lower two thirds, brown on outside except for base covered with 2 cm long flat black spines; petiole 35 cm long, round below, shallowly grooved above, margins rounded, with fine light brown tomentum, spiny with 3-50 mm long spines oriented in all directions; rachis 185 cm long, round below, triangular above, covered with brown tomentum below, green and with few scales above, with few 5 cm spines; pinnae 49 per side, regularly spced and in one horizontal plane, lower pinnae 47 cm long, 1 cm wide, middle pinnae 70 cm long, 3 cm wide, apical pinnae 29 cm long, 2 cm wide, all pinnae with 3 mm long spines on margin and above. Infructescence pendulous, infrafoliar; prophyll bicarinate, 16 cm long, 4 cm wide, smooth, inserted at base of peduncle; peduncular bract 40 cm long, 12 cm wide, persistent, with 20 cm long part sheathing peduncle, this unarmed, expanded part with 3 mm long spines; peduncle 30 cm long, 1.5 cm wide, dorso-ventrally compressed with round margins, finely spinose-pubescent toward apex; rachis 15 cm long, simple, obscured by fruits; fruits ca. 150, forming infructescence 18 cm long, 11 cm wide; fruits 4 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, apex apiculate, prismatic, 6-angled, white at base, cream-coloured at middle, greenish-yellow apically but becoming mauve when ripe; exocarp fibrous, mesocarp white, fleshy, endocarp bony; embryosubapical.
