| Field notes | Solitary tree on terra firme, 23 m tall. Base of trunk with 1 m high and 1 m wide clump of adventitious roots. Trunk 7 m high, 24 cm DBH, smooth, light brown with 20-30 cm long internodes. Crown of 15 erect leaves, the base of the leaves producing a fine wooly mass and thicker (c. 1 mm), hard and rigid fibres from the margin of the lower part of the petiole. Leaf 785 x 164 cm; petiole 110 cm long, abaxially round, adaxially with a round groove; blade 675 x 164 cm with 2 x 89 pinnae; rachis rounded below, flat above in the lower part, triangular higher up, pinnae green above, silvery below. Infructescences inserted 40-50 cm below lowest leaf, one rotting, the other with green fruits; basal part (below prophyll) grasping the trunk, 24 cm wide and 12 cm long in the center; the part between the prophyll-scar and bract-scar 10 cm long and 15 cm wide, cylindrical, rachis 46 cm long and 13 cm wide basally, tapering to a point; branches c. 250, each one to 120 cm long, the basal 15 cm bare and the apical 60 cm bare, the part in between with an average of 3 fruits, giving a total of c. 750 fruits. The inflorescence points upwards in an angle of c. 30°, the basal parts are brown, the apical parts and the branches are cream coloured and becoming a little pink. The inflorescence branches are confined to the lateral and lower side of rachis. Duplicates: AAU, K, NY, QCA, QCNE. |
