| Field notes | Secoya: "Ñu-quë". A large clump of several hundred stems. Individual trees to 6 m tall. Trunk 3-4 cm in diam, with black spines pointing downwards. Crown of 3-4 expanded leaves; sheaths heavily spiny 30-40 cm long; petioles 15-20 cm long; blade ca 160 x 100 cm with 46 pinnae on each side.Inflorescences infrafoliar, one per trunk, spathe persistent; fruiting part to 20 x 10 cm with many fruits densely packed together, each fruit first green, then, when mature, maroon, exocarp leaf?ery, mesocarp white juicy, with a pleasant taste. Uses: The mesocarp is eaten. The trunk is scraped and the fine (spaaner)? are used to load (cartuehos). |
