| Field notes | Quichua: "Antsimbira"; "Urpi Chunda" (Urpi = dove). Clumps of many trees in wet places. Stem ca 4 cm in diam, spiny. Crown of 4-5 leaves, sheaths 40-50 cm long, spiny, petiole ca 70 cm long; blade 130 x 80 cm, with 24 pinnae on each side, inserted at irregular intervals. Inflorescence one on each tree, inserted in the axil of old leafsheath below the crown. Uses;The stem is used for making bands that hold the hides on locally produced snare drums.
