| Field notes | Quichua: A varity of "Urpi-chonta". Liana. Stem 25 m long, growing out of the ground, ca 1.5 cm diam at the base, smooth, the upper 10 m with leaves, spaced at ca 40 cm intervals, on this part the stem is covered with the spiny leafsheaths, and then ca 3-4 cm in diam incl. the sheaths, spines brown to 3 cm long; petiole 20-30 cm long, spiny; each side with 9-10 pinna, inserted opposite one another or alternately, the rachis slightly spiny at the base, beyond the pinna the rachis is prolonged into a 150 cm long extension with 8-9 pairs of backwords pointed spines, the part of the leaf that bears pinna c. 2 m long.
