| Field notes | A solitary tree left over in pasture in an area of tropical rain forest on terra firme. The base with an inverted cone of adventitious roots, 30 cm high, 60 cm wide; individual roots brown, 3-4 cm in diam, spiny; spines with white, swollen base. Trunk 5.5 m high, 14 cm in diam throughout, smooth, brown; internodes 14 cm long near the base, 4 cm long at the top. Crown of 7 leaves; crownshaft150 cm long, 13-18 cm in diam; petioles ca 15 cm long, cross section; blade 310 x 220 cm, with 39 pinnae on each side. Inflorescence 6, only one at each node below the crown; two upper ones still enclosed in the two primary spathes, 15 x 7 cm and 16 x 8 cm respectively; the third inflorescence expanded, with three basal spathes with an expanded part forming a small "roof" over the inflorescence, peduncle 24 cm long, basal part erect, upper part bending out- and downwards, rachis very short with 5 sidebranches densely covered with hairy fruits, these sidebranches with their fruits form sausage like structures, 9-16 cm long and 4-5.5 cm diam; inflorescence nos 4 and 5 like no 3 but more mature and the sausage like sidebranches to 20 cm long and 10 cm diam the 6th inflorescence old, with the fruits all fallen off but with all the spathes persisting.
