Field notes Clumps of up to 10 or more trees. Base with clumps of adventitious roots to 70 cm up the trunk, roots to 5 mm in diam, brown. Trunks to 4 cm in diameter, brown, internodes to 4 cm long, trunk to 4 m high. Crown of about 8 leaves, sheaths closed, smooth, to 40 cm long, petiole 160 cm long; blade 220 x 130 cm; pinnae ca 35 on each side. Inflorescences up to 3 on each tree, inserted in the axils of old leafsheaths that have dropped their blades; basal sheath persistent, spathe inserted on the peduncle 10 cm from the base, persistent throughout fruiting, peduncle about 70 cm long, rachis about 30 cm long, sidebranches to 40 cm long, flowers light yellow, fruits first green, becoming black.
