| Field notes | Siona: "Pon-sá". Spanish: "Achiote". A 4-5 m high treelet with white flowers.The seeds of this tree produce a yellow stain which is used in cooking and for headpainting. An extract is made od a different plant and in this the seeds are boiled to extract the dye which is then boiled down to a paste. Other trees produce a red dye. |
