| Field notes | Forming large clumps and reaching further out in the river than most other trees, always with the bax inundated and therefore not seen. Trunk to10 m high, 5-7 cm in diam, usually ascending, sometimes erect, copiously provided with black spines on the internodes; spines to 10 cm long or more. Crown of 6-8 spreading leaves; sheaths closed, enclosing the trunk; petiole 10-15 cm long, spiny; blade 120 x 80 cm, with 50 pinnae on each side. Inflorescences to 3 on each tree in different stages of development, originatingin the axil of old persisting leafsheaths below the crown, with persistent spiny spathe; male and female flowers intermixed on the same branch, male flowers soon falling. |
