| Field notes | (Scheelea sp). Siona: "Pa-pa". Spanish: "Canambo". A solitary tree growing ona 200 cm wide and 40 cm high mound of adventitious roots covered with soil so the roots are not obvious. Trunk straight, 11 m high, the lower 6 m clean, 45 cm in diam, brown, undulating from leafscars about 10 cm apart,longitudinally fissured, the upper 5 m covered with persisting rotting old leafsheats. Crown of about 15 leaves turning the blades in a vertical position. Sheath with 1 mm thick fibers on the margin; blade 950 x 270 cm with 173 pinnae on each side. Inflorescence originating between the leaves; spathe persistent, 200 (+) cm long, brown with deep longitudinal fissures. Only male inflorescence collected, peduncle 100 (+) cm long; rachis 100 cm long with about 220 branches of which the longest central ones are about 30 cm long, or these branches the male flowers are inserted. Uses: Leaves used for thatching houses. |
