Field notes A solitary tree. The base with an inverted cone, 150 cm high of innumerable adventitious roots; each root black, spiny, to 5 cm in diameter and branching. The trunk about 15 m long, 15 cm in diam basally, 13 cm below the crown; brown, smooth, with 10 cm long internodes below the crown; cross-section with an outer extremely hard layer and a spongy, pink pith. The crown of 4 leaves on a 120 cm long crownshaft. Leaves with 120 cm long, closed sheaths; petiole 40 cm long, channeled near the base, round near the blade; blade 380 x 220 cm with 20 pinnae on each side, each pinnae divided and fanshaped, with the base twisted on the rachis so the leaves becomes 3-dimensional. Inflorescences of varying ages inserted below the crown, the one at the 8th node horn-like (enclosed in the spathes) and 220 cm long; The one at the 9th internodes expanded, peduncle 44 cm long with 7 scars, rachis 30 cm long with 28 branches that bifurcates immediately and hang down, the longest branch 140 cm long, the whole expanded inflorescence light yellow.
