Field notes A solitary tree forming stands in virgin forest and left in cut over forest. The base with an inverted cone of about 30 adventitious roots, cone 53 cm high and 60 cm wide, each root 4-5 cm in diam, black and spiny; spines with swollen, white base. Trunk 13 m high, 11.5 cm diam at the base, 10 cm diam apically, smooth grey high up; internodes 21 cm long near the base, 2-3 long below the crownshaft; the nodes 2-3 cm wide encircling the trunk. Crown of 5 spreading leaves on a 140 cm long and 10 cm thick crownshaft. Leaves with green, completely closed sheaths, 140 cm long; transition to petiole with black sticky resin; petiole 12 cm long, 4 cm wide, channeled at the base, round towards the blade; blade 355 x 170 cm with 58 pinnae on each side, the pinnae all arranged in one plane. Inflorescences inserted at 1st to 5th node below the crownshaft; up to 6 inflorescences of varying ages at each node, all inflorescences male on the plant from which leaves were male inflorescence with several spathes and with 4-5 pendant branches with male flowers, with pleasant odour. Female inflorescences collected from other plant (dioecious), the mature fruiting inflorescence with 3-4 pendant sausage? like branches, each of them 30-40 cm long and 8 cm in diam with the green hairy fruits densely available.
