| Field notes | Open stands of solitary trees. Base with an inverted cone, 170 cm high and 200 cm in diam of about 150-200 adventitious roots; each root 5-6 cm in diam grey or black, the young ones with spines with swollen base; the whole cone? of adventitious roots covered with epiphytic and scandent plants. The trunk 14 m high, 37 cm in diam at the base, 48 cm in the middle and 42 cm below the crown; smooth grey; internodes 35 cm art the base, 5-10 cm below the crown; cross section with the outer? 1 cm ????, but not with selerenchyma? fiber, the next 5-6 with selerenchyma stand, most densely externally less densely towards the center, center of trunk soft. Crown of 6 spreading leaves; crownshaft 140 cm long. Leaves with 140 cm long closed glaucous leafsheath; petiole 70 cm long about 12 cm widw and grooved basally; 9 cm wide and round below the blade; blade 380 x 220 cm with 37 pinnae on each side, each pinna with the base twisted on the rachis so the blade becomes 3 dimensional, the pinna divided in 7 segments, the basal one wider than the rest; rachis of the blade with the abaxial side rounded and the adaxial side triangular. Female inflorescences 2 expanded and one still enclosed in the spathes, inserted immediately below the leafbases painting upwards in an angle?? of 45° throughout fruiting; peduncle 80 cm long with 8 scars from spathes, rachis straight 180 cm long with more than 100 side branches, these branched once (pressed specimen includes one such branch lateral to the rachis); fruits green with white slightly translucent endosperm. Male inflorescences collected from different tree (dioccious?) with peduncle and rachis about the same size as female inflorescences, yellow throughout, with over 100 sidebranches which branches 1 (one such branch lateral to the rachis pressed). Young male inflorescence still enclosed in i??spa??? 340 cm long. zUses: According to Sr. Quillotoa, a colonizer who arrived 18 years ago the trunk is used for fenceposts and will last for 4 years. The seeds are used for counting excersize. |
