Field notes Clumps of 3-4 trees in highly disturbed forest. Bare with an inverted cone, 15 cm high and 15 cm in diam, of smooth greenish brown, thin adventition roots. Trunk adscending, 510 cm high, 5 cm in diam throughout. Leaves with a 25 cm long almost completely open sheath, petiole 75 cm long, blade 150 x 95 cm, pinnately divided with about 15 pinnae on each side. Inflorescence red, fruit black when mature. Uses: According to Sr. Armando Ortiz Silva, lumberman, carpenter and farmer in Moravia, the black substance of the mature fruits can be used as a dye.
