| Field notes | A solitary tree in remnants of virgin forest, but often left in otherwise deforested areas. The base of the trunk lifted from the ground by about 15 to 3 m long and 5-8 cm diam, brown, spiny advertition roots forming a loose open inverted cone, 3 m high and 1.40 m diam at the base. Trunk straight, smooth, grey, 15.4 m long, ca 13 in diam. Crown of 6 expanded fronds and 1lance-like, erect young leaf; crownshaft 165 cm long, 16.5 diam basally, 11 cm diam apically; petioles 65 cm, blades 230 x 120 cm with 21 pinnae on each side, each pinna divided and the base twisted on the rachis so the enblade becomes 3-dimensional with the appearence of a fox´s tail. Inflorescence inserted 5 cm below crownshaft; peduncle first ascending, then dropping, with 1st order branches only. Fruits green when immature. No uses according to Armando Ortiz Silva. Trunk soft and unsuited for construction. Hart of palm sometimes good but this specimen bitter. The young fruits eates when seeds are still soft according to the maid of hotel Turiugia in Puyo. |
