| Field notes | Quichua: Achote. A small tree or large shrub cultivated in the garden of indigenous house. Uses: Food coloring and after birth treatment. Preparation: The leaves are boiled in water and the drink is given to the women 8 days after she has given birth to clean her stomack and to get her out of bed. The seeds are dried and kept so. When needed for food coloring the stain is extracted in fat (?) and then added to the food. |
