| Field notes | Single stemmed palm; 10 m tall. Stem 5 cm wide. Internodes grey, 2 cm long, armed with <2cm long glossy brown spines espicially in the uppermost 25 cm of the stem. Crownshaft 60 cm long, 6 cm wide. 11 leaves in crown. Leaf sheaths greyish-green with appressed glossy brown spines. Leaf 170 cm ca 50 drooping pinnae per side. Petiole 15 cm, abaxially covered with 3 cm long black-brown spines. Rachis 155 cm. Inflorescences infrafoliar, branching to 2 orders, rachis <28 cm long, burgundy. Remaining inflorescence yellow-green. First-order branches <3 cm long, radillae <32 cm long. Calyx yellow-green, corolla and ovary brown in female flowers after anthesis. Infructescence dark burgundy to deep purple-black. Fruit globose, ca. 1 cm diameter, olive green. |
