| Field notes | Cespitose understory small palm with few visible roots. Stem 2 m long and 4 cm diam; internodes 5 cm long, longer than stem diameter, smooth, brown. Crownshaft absent. Leaves 13 per stem; sheaths open, 30 cm long, with 10 cm long, black spines; petiole round in cross-section, 100 cm long with 10 cm long, black spines; rachis 120 cm with 8 cm long black spines; lamina pinnate 80 cm wide, 130 cm long, bushy, with 22 segment per side in groups of 3-4, basal pinna 40 cm long, middle pinna 60 cm long. Infructescence interfoliar; peduncular bract 30 cm, woody, brown with 1 cm long, brown spines; rachis 10 cm, less than 1 cm wide; rachillae many; fruits green with 2 mm long brown spines. |
