| Field notes | Caespitose palm left in pasture, very common. Cluster with five stems, to 975 cm tall, dbh. 9 cm. Eight leaves, leaf sheath 80 cm completely encircling the stem and forming a crownshaft, petiole 7 cm, rachis 180 cm, with 2 x 41 pinnae. Four old infrafoliar infructescences and 3 younger (1 with mature fruits, 1 with green fruits, 1 with flowers). Most individuals in the area with green or mature fruits at the time of collecting. Vernacular name: Palmo, Palmitto (spanish). The palm heart is edible. Buyers from canning factories in Quito have recently started to buy palm hearts from this area at 40 sucres a piece (US$ = 840 sucres). |
