| Field notes | Solitary. Stem 1.5-2.5 m, 3-5 cm diam, armed with black, flat spines to 5 cm in bands below the nodes. Leaves 8, erect, arching; sheath 25 cm, closed for 3-6 cm, armed with yellow spines to 2 cm; petiole 18 cm, armed with yellow spines to 3 cm, fewer towards apex, sometimes almost unarmed; rachis 112 cm, unarmed or with scattered spines, rounded below, bifacial above; pinnae 12-13 per side, inserted in groups of 2-3, groups spaced by 10-20 cm, pinnae thin, densely hirsute, especially below, dark green above, pale green below, basal pinnae 15 x 1 cm, middle pinnae 23 x 15 cm (lower of a group), 25 x 15 cm (upper of a group), apical pinnae 23 x 6 cm. Inflorescence interfoliar, erect; prophyll 27 x 1 cm; peduncular bract fibrously decaying; peduncle 75 cm, 0.5 cm diam, green, sparsely armed towards apex, spines yellow, to 0.5 cm; rachis 75 cm; rachillae 12, lower 15 cm, upper 6 cm; immature fruit brown with a green ring below the apex, rostrate, 5 x 4 mm. |
