Field notes Cespitose, two stems with suckers at base. Stem 6 m, 7-8 cm diam, upper half with persistent leafsheaths; internodes 7-9 cm, armed with black, flat spines to 8 cm. Leaves 5, erect and arching; sheath 80 cm, closed for 20-30 cm, dark brown, densely armed with black, flat, tomentose-margined spines to 8 cm; petiole 100 cm, rounded below, flat to rounded above, green, caducous-tomentose, unarmed; rachis 220-260 cm, rounded below, ridged above, green, unarmed; pinnae 17-19 per side, in groups of 3, the lower of each group shorter and more erect than the upper, basal pinnae 26-45 x 1-13 cm, middle pinnae 37 x 15 cm (lower group), 58 x 17 cm (upper of a group), apical pinnae 35-40 x 25-32 cm. Infrutescence interfoliar, pendulous; prophyll 45 x 5 cm; peduncular bract decaying, fibrous; peduncle 170 cm, basally flattened, 3 x 1.5 cm, apically rounded, 1.5 cm diam., light green, armed with many black or brown spines to 5 cm; rachis 60 cm, basally with spines like those on peduncle; rachillae 50, upper 22 staminate, wilting, lower 36 cm. Immature fruits yellow or light green, red at apex, slightly rostrate. Inflorescnece at pistillate anthesis (taken from an other plant) interfoliar, pendulous; prophyll 50 x 5.5 cm, margins cream adaxially, green abaxially, abaxial side densely covered centrally with short, brown setae, adaxialy side cream-green, smooth; peduncular bract 205 cm, tubular for 60 cm, upper part hanging down, this brown, chartaceous, unarmed; peduncle 115 cm, green, armed with black, flat, tomentose-margined spines to 3 cm; rachis 80 cm, armed basally; rachillae 60, the lower 38 with pistillate flowers, to 85 cm, upper 25 cm.
