Field notes Caespitose, one stem and several suckers. Stem 1 m, procumbent for 40 cm, 2 cm diam.; internodes 4-5 cm, sparsely armed with short black spines; leafscars very pronounced; base of erect part of stem with several adventitios roots and suckers. Leaves 8, spreading; sheath 17 cm, densely armed with black, slender spines to 1 cm, closed for 4 cm; petiole 24 cm rounded, unarmed or with few spines to 1 cm; rachis 40-50 cm, covered with short setae on lower side, no spines; blade entire, bifid at apex, 56-62 x 22-26 cm, margins erose-dentate, veins 17 per side, prominent above, lined with few slender spines to 1 cm, whole blade densely pubescent below. Inflorescence bud interfoliar, erect; prophyll 12 x 1 cm, cream at base, green above, abaxially armed with appressed spines to 0.5 cm long; peduncular bract 29 cm, densely armed with short spines to 3 mm on upper part; spike 17.5 x 1 cm. Note: Old leaves of this species are heavily covered with epiphylls.
