| Field notes | Cespitose. Stem to 5 m, 3 cm diam., with spines to 7 cm; internodes 8 cm. Leaves 5-7; sheath 30 cm, closed for 6 cm, densely covered sith spines to 7 cm; petiole 25 cm, with spines to 6 cm; rachis 110 cm; pinnae 16-18 per side, in groups of 1-4, normally in triplets, the proximal of each group shorter and more erect than the distal, all the pinnae plicate along the secondary nerves, below covered with hair-like spinule, basal pinnae 12 x 3 cm, middle pinnae 23 x 10 cm (lower of a group), 30 x 9 cm (upper of a group), apical pinnae 24 x 7 cm. Inflorescence bud interfoliar, erect; prophyll 48 cm, 3 cm wide, spiny abaxially; peduncular bract 56 cm; rachillae ca. 60. Inflorescence past staminate anthesis interfoliar; prophyll 56 cm, 3 cm wide; peduncular bract 140 cm, tubular for 60 cm, distal part hanging down; peduncle 102 cm, 1 cm wide at base, 0.7 cm at top, densely covered with yellow, slender spines to 2 cm; rachis 53 cm, covered with violet spinules; rachillae 40, lower 32 cm long, 0.5 cm diam. on pistillate part, upper rachillae 10 cm long, staminta, with no flowers. Note: this specimen was exposed in a small clearing in the forest. It had 2 old inflorescences, one inflorescence near pistillate anthesis, and one inflorescence bud. |
