| Field notes | Caespitose, to 3 stems. Stem to 3 m, procumbent, 2.5-3.5 cm diam., basally with numerous adventitious roots to 60 cm long, 1 cm diam., reddish brown, sometimes with adventitious roots of suckers from the upper nodes; internodes 6-7 cm, armed with black spines to 3.5 cm. Leaves 4 plus 3 wilted ones hanging down; sheath of lower leaf 25 cm, closed for 5 cm, densely spiny; petiole 16 cm rounded below, flat above, green, with many black spines to 4 cm; rachis 90 cm, with few spines to 4 cm on proximal half, distally with a cover of short spinules, especially towards apex; pinnae 19 per side, in groups of 3 or sometimes 4, basal pinnae 8 x 2 cm, middle pinnae 21 x 7 xm, apical pinnae 14 x 8 cm. Inflorescence interfoliar, erect to slightly pendent, past pistillate anthesis; prophyll 44 cm, 2 cm wide, green at base, wilted brown apically; peduncular bract 110 cm, inserted just above prophyll, light brown, hanging down, not spiny; peduncle 112 cm, 1 cm diam at base, 0.4 cm apically, light green, covered with slender spines to 2 cm; rachis 26 cm; rachillae 37, upper 20 satminate, wilting, lower 27 cm long, upper 8 cm, all densely covered with short, brown-violet spinules. |
