| Field notes | Caespitose with 5 stems and several suckers. Stems to 4 m, 4 cm diam., spiny, basally with numerous adventitious roots to 50 cm, 1-2 cm diam. Leaves 5, erect and arching; sheath 42 cm, open to base, covered with black spines to 5 cm; petiole 36 cm; rachis 140 cm, with many yellow spines 1-2 cm long; pinnae 16 per side, in pairs spaced by 20-25 cm, broadly cuneate, plicate along the secondary nerves, basal pinnae 23 x 0.5 cm, middle pinnae 25 x 9 cm (the upper of a pair), 32 x 10 (the upper), apical pinnae 25 x 9 cm. Old inflorescence interfoliar, erect with pendent rachillae; prophyll brown, decaying; peduncular bract fibrous, hanging down; peduncle 147 cm, covered with yellow apines to 2 cm; rachis 35 cm; rachillae 30, wilted, the lower 40 cm, densely covered with short spines. |
