| Field notes | Caespitose with one stem and several suckers. Stem 4 m, 7 cm diam., grey, armed with spines to 10 cm in bands below the nodes; internodes 15 cm at base, 3 cm at top: Leaves 7, spreading; sheath of lower leaf 42 cm, spiny, bending away from stem for 20 cm in a 90° curve; petiole 2 cm; rachis 118 cm, rounded below, ridged above, with many spines to 4 cm above and few below; pinnae 53 per side, in groups of 4-9, the lower of each group almost vertical, the upper horizontal, basal pinnae 27 x 2 cm, middle pinnae 29 x 7 cm, apical pinnae 11 x 13 cm, 6-nerved. Inflorescence bud interfoliar, erect; prophyll 20 cm, 6 cm wide at base, adaxially cream to green, smooth, abaxially white tomentose with some short spines on upper part; peduncular bract 54 cm, 2 cm diam., green, white tomentose, with very few spines. Inflorescence past pistillate anthesis interfoliar; prophyll 23 cm, 4 cm wide at base; peduncular bract 90 cm, brown, hanging down; peduncle 56 cm, erect, slightly curving, spiny, white tomentose; rachis 40 cm, unarmed; rachillae 38, the lower 33 cm, the upper 12 cm. Infrutescence inserted in axil of a lower, wilted leaf; prophyll 23 cm, cream at base, 4 cm wide, light brown and chartaceous above, with some spines to 1 cm abaxially, peduncular bract 83 cm, hanging down, 4 cm wide on distal flat part, light brown, with very few spines; peduncle 46 cm, 1.5 cm diam., densely covered with black, downwards pointing spines to 4 cm; rachis 35 cm, light green, unarmed, upper 10 cm wilted; rachillae 38, the lower 30 cm with 1-3 fruits, the upper 20 wilted; immature fruits globose, green, 2 cm diam. Local name "Corozo". According to local informant mature fruits are red, with edible endosperm, taste like cocos. |
