Identification qualifier  
Field notes Caespitose with up to 10 stems. Stem 2-2.5 m, 5-6 cm diam., armed with black, flattened spines to 13 cm long, in bands just below the nodes. Leaves 6; sheath of lower leaf 33 cm, bending away from stem for 13 cm, open to base, densely armed with yellow spines to 5 cm long; petiole 21 cm, rounded below, flat above, with a dense cover of short and few to 6 cm spines; rachis 131 cm, rounded below, ridged above, with a dense cover of fine, reddish brown ca. 0.5 cm long spines, below also with some yellow 1-2 (-6) cm long spines, especiallly towards the apex; pinnae 14 per side, inserted in groups of 2-3 of which the lower is shorter and more erect than the upper, broadly cuneate, young ones strongly plicate, basal pinnae 15 x 3 cm, middle pinnae 40 x 12 cm (the upper of a group), 30 x 13 cm (the lower), apical pinnae 34 x 20 cm. Inflorescence interfoliar, erect; prophyll 60 cm, cream at base, withering brown from the top; peduncular bract inserted 2 cm above prophyll, 175 cm long, 4 cm wide, light brown, densely covered with microscopic spines; peduncle 134 cm, 2 cm wide at base, 1 cm above, lower part with many fine spines to 1 cm long, upper part densely covered with short hairlike spines; rachis 56 cm, violet, densely covered with short, brown, hairlike spines; rachillae 83, spiny like rachis, lower 57 cm, upper 10 cm; staminate flowers white to violet, petals completely spreading. Infructescence (old) interfoliar, hanging down; prophyll 53 cm, wilted; peduncular bract broken off; peduncle 145 cm; rachis 30 cm; rachillae ca. 50, to 22 cm long; fruits ca. 5 mm diam., rostrate, black and decaying.
