| Field notes | Solitary. Stem 1.5 m tall, 4-5 cm diam., black-spiny. Leaves 9; sheath 30 cm long, densely spiny; petiole 35 cm long, green, unarmed; rachis 120 cm long, unarmed; pinnae 15 per side, in groups of 1-22 or subregularly inserted, borne horizontally, dark green above, paler below, hirsute on both sides, with no spines, middle pinne 18-21 x 5.5-6 cm. Inflorescence at staminate anthesis interfoliar, erect, rachillae pendent; peduncle 5 cm long; rachis 125 cm long, with flowers on the apical 25 cm; rachillae 12, widely spaced; basal rachillae 115 cm long, with flowers only on the apical 33 cm; second rachilla from the base inserted 55 cm above the first, 65 cm long, with flowers only on the apical 29 cm; apical rachilla 22 cm long, without lowers for 5 cm. Staminate flowers purple with yellow anthers, petals reflexed. Note: Inflorescnece bud from another individual nearby collected on the same number. |
