Field notes Solitary. Stem 5 m tall, 3 cm diam. at base, 2 cm diam. at apex, very hard, light brown, almost spineless; internodes 1-2 cm long. Leaves 9, spreading to recurving; sheath 28 cm long; petiole 15-25 cm long, green, with very few, yellow spines; rachis 80-85 cm long, green, spineless; pinnae 9-10 per side, inserted in pairs spaced by 16-24 cm, indifferent planes; basal pinnae 14-15 x 5-8 cm, middle pinnae 18-19 x 1719 cm (proximal of a pair), 28-30 x 17-18 cm (distal of a pair), apical pinnae 17-20 x 19-23 cm; pinnae dark green above, pale green below, glabrous, soft. Inflorescence and infrutescence interfoliar, erect, curving; prophyll 40-43 x ca. 1.5 cm, cream at base, green above, wilting apically, unarmed; peduncular bract inserted just above prophyll, green, unarmed, soon witherin; peduncle 118 x 0.6 cm (inflorescence), 130 x 0.7 cm (infructescence), green, armed with slender, yellow spines to 1 cm long; rachis 34 cm long, ending in a 4 cm long spike; rachillae 19-29, green, unarmed. Flower buds purple, containing a purple liquid. Mature fruits red, 7 x 8 mm.
