| Field notes | Caespitose, with 1 stem and 2 basal suckers. Stem 4 m tall, 3-4 cm diam., almost without spines. Leaves 6; petiole 30-50 cm long, with yellow spines adaxially; rachis 120-130 cm long, with few yellow spines, more towards apex; pinnae 13-14 per side, inserted in pairs spaced by 15-20 cm, in several planes, strongly plicate, paler below than above, middle pinnae 25 x 16 (proximal of a pair), 31-36 x 16-17 (distal of a pair). Inflorescence interfoliar, erect, in pistillate anthesis; peduncular bract wilted; peduncle 105 cm long, 8 mm diam. at apex, yellow-spiny; rachis 70 cm long; rachillae 104, the lower 52 with pistillate flowers on the basal half, the remaining staminate, withering, basal rachillae 42 cm long, apical rachillae ca. 10 cm long. Pistillate flowers white, producing small amounts of nectar near apex. Flies and a few beetles collected from inflorescence. |
