Field notes Solitary, medium sized to large palm tree. Stem to 10 m tall, ca. 10 cm in diam. at base, 7 cm in diam. at apex, grey, with dark leafscars 15-20 cm apart at base, dense distally. Leaves 10, spreading, plumose; sheath grey, smooth, waxy, 50-60 cm long, continuous with petiole, this 20-25 cm long, ca. 2.5 cm in diam. at base, 2 cm at apex, grey to light brown, with a light brown waxy tomentum; ravhis 80-85 cm long, with tomentum like petiole, above with a hastula like brown ridge which terminates 35-40 cm from apex; pinnae 77 per side, inserted in groups of 7-10 in the central part of the leaf ditally groups continuous, pinnae pointing in different directions, the lower of each group erect, the upper horizontal, dital half of each pinna often twisted and pendulous, adding to the crisp appearance of the leaves; basal pinna ± filiform, 15-20 cm long, middle pinnae 33-38 cm long, 22 mm wide, dark green and smooth above except for tomentose midrib, light grey to brown, smooth, and waxy below. Infructescences 1-3 per plant, interfoliar, curving to pendulous; prophyll 19-22 x 5 cm; 1st penduncular brach inserted 1 cm above prophyll, 36-46 x 4 cm diam.; 2nd bract inserted 3 cm above prophyll, 75-86 x 3-5 cm diam.; 3rd bract inserted 10 cm above prophyll, 110-115 x 4-5 cm diam.; 4th bract inserted 30-35 cm above prophyll, 100 x 4 cm diam.; reminiscent 5th bract inserted 80-90 cm above prophyll, 10 cm long; peduncle 100-110 cm long, flattened, 3 x 1 cm at base, green with a dense grey to brown tomentum, easily scraped off; rachis 40-45 cm long, green; primary branches 35-40, ca. the upper 10 simple; lower branches 15-21 cm long, flattened, 3 mm wide at base, distally ca. 1 mm wide, flexuose, with up to 15 simple secondary branches, these to 10 cm long, 1 mm in diam., flexuose. Fruits (with solid, hard endosperm) globose, dull bluish green, slightly verruculose, 13-15 mm in diam.; seed brown, globose, smooth, 11 mm in diam.
