Field notes Acaulescent or short stemmed, solitary or caespitose with up to 3 shoots per plant. Petiole to 135 cm long, rachis 65-85 cm long, pinnae 11-16 per side, mostly 2 ribbed (1-3), regularly inserted, held in one plane. Leaves 6-13, erect. Prophyll 8-20 cm long, bract 21-43 cm long, peduncle 48-91 cm long, spike 21-30 cm long, 7-9 mm diam. Fruits rose red, becoming more brownish at maturity, elongate-acute, ca. 8x6 mm. This species apparently prefers poorly drained soil near small streams, but occurs also on well drained hill tops.
