Field notes Hemiepiphyte or tree, to 6 m tall, primary branches erect, secondary branches horizontal to pendent, with rising tips. Leaves on flowering branches alternate, 7-10 cm apart; ligule 4-6 cm long, ca. 2.5 cm wide at base; petiole 40-50 cm long, ca. 1 cm in diam., green, orange or violet, with a brown, caducous tomentum; leaflets 5-7, more or less pendulous, dark green and transversely furrowed above, paler below, with a greyish to reddish brown, caducous tomentum; veins prominent below; petiole of central leaflet 9-13 cm long, ca. 5 mm in diam., those of basal leaflets 5-7 cm long: central leaflet 40-62 x 12-19 cm, with a 2-3 cm long acumen. Inflorescences 7-11 per branch, 57-66 cm long, 10-13 mm in diam., brown-tomentose, borne on apical 16 cm, subtended by strongly modified, bract-like leaves, ca. 5 x 2 cm, or the 3 lower branches sometimes subtended by small, compound leaves. Flowers in nearly sessile heads, 34-39 per inflorescence, globose to elongate, (15-)22-25 mm long; axis ca. 10 x 5 mm, slightly narrowed in middle; calyx greenish white with brown villous tomentum, 6-7 mm high, valves < 0.5 mm long, truncate-crenulate, often with filiform, membranous teeth; styles 5, 2-3 mm long, half. connate.
