Pachitea, region of Pucallpa, western part of the "Sira mountains" and adjacent lowland; ca. 26 km S of Puerto Inca, next to the junction of the Rio Pachitea and Rio Yuyapichis, biological field station "Panguana"; Primary lowland rain forest with some xeromorphic elements, partly low, partly disturbed by local agriculture and logging. Soils: white sands or brown latosols with rocky outcrops. |
| Field notes | habit: clustered palm (1-4 stems) of the understory, often 5-6m but up to 7.5m. stem: up to 6.2m length, +/- 3.7cm in diameter; internodes 11- 13cm long and basally with a single row of 3-4cm long black spines. eaves: (5)-6-(7) leaves; total length +/- 300cm; sheaths: 45- 50cm long, green (old leaves: yellowish- or brownish-green); basal 15cm enclosing the stem, distally splitting into fibres opposite of the petiole; abaxially with black spines (0.5-4cm); petiole: +/- 70cm long, green with decreasing number of shorter spines, basally 17x13mm, terminal 13x7mm in diameter; rachis: +/- 150cm long, green, still with some spines (but sometimes completely unarmed distally of the first group of leaflets), bearing +/- 25 pinnae per side, these basally in alternate groups of 1-4, then arranged in opposite groups of 4-6. inflorescence/infructescence: single, interfoliar, curved downwards, branched to 1st order, monoeceous, protogynous; peduncle: +/- 25cm long, light green with brown indumentum, bearing prophyll (20-24cm long, dark-brown) and the persisting lst peduncular bract (50cm long, green, later brown, unarmed, only sometimes a few spines on its end); rachis: 3-4cm, whitish green, bearing 16-18 whitish, spirally arranged rachillae, +/- 17cm long; flowers: female and male flowers whitish, female flowers scattered in triads in the mainly male rachillae, the distal 1/3 only with male flowers; fruit: mature fruit dark violet, 1.5cm in diameter with an apical stigmatic remain and persisting perianth (brown); endocarp woody, 6xllmm with 3 germpores |
