| Field notes | Solitary palm 8.5 m tall. Stem 6.5 m from base to crownshaft, covered with lichens. Diam. at base 5.5 cm, diam. below crownshaft 5 cm. Internodes green, 8 cm long at the base, 3 cm long below the crownshaft. Nodes prominent, 1 cm long, brown. Base of stem with numerous adventitious roots. Adventiotious roots branching, orange-brown with lenticels, forming a basal cone, 35 cm tall, 65 cm in diam. No. of leaves 6 + 1 juvenile. Leafsheath 80 cm long, encircling the stem for 65 cm, green. Petiole 23 cm long, green. Rachis 160 cm long, green, adaxially with a prominent midridge, abaxially rounded. No. of pinnae 2 x 28. Pinnae inserted in one plane, regularly distributed except for minor displacements making pinnae opposite in some areas and alternated in others. Pinnae green, slightly falcate, adaxially with prominent veins. Basal pinna 45 x 4 cm, middle pinna 62 x 8 cm, apical pinna 26 x 5.3 cm. Inflorescences female; inserted at 1st, 2nd and 3rd node below the crownshaft. Inflorescences at 3rd node old, decaying, inflorescences at 1st node below the crownshaft 18, adnate at the base for 0.3-0.9 cm; 1 old inflorescence, 2 young inflorescences just starting to flower, 15 buds of different size, becoming minor towards the sides. Inflorescence: prophyll; inserted 0.1 cm above the base, decaying. 1st sterile bract; inserted 7.6 cm above the base, 6 cm long, splitting up irregularly (decaying). 2nd sterile bract; inserted 10 cm above the base 12.5 cm long, splitting up laterally right side for 8 cm. Apical part somewhat swollen, dry, black. 3rd sterile bract; inserted 11 cm above the base, 14.5 cm long, splitting up abaxially for 9.5 cm. The splitting up part green, swollen. 4th sterile bract; inserted 16 cm above the base, 3 cm long, thin, green, encircling the peduncle, splitting up apically. Peduncle 19 cm long, creamy-white, cross-section circular, diam. below the basal rachillae 1.1 cm. Rachis 6 cm long. No. of rachillae 33. Basal rachilla 5 cm long, apical rachill 3 cm long. Rachis, rachillae and flowers creamy-white. |
