| Field notes | Solitary palm, 350 cm tall. Stem green, glabrous, 160 cm long from base to crownshaft. Diam. at base 6.5 cm, diam. below crownshaft 4.4 cm. No. of internodes 15. Basal internode 3 cm long, apical 12 cm long. Nodes brown, 0.5 cm long. Base of stem with numerous adventitious roots. Adventitious roots up to 1.3 cm in diam., creamy-white to orange-brown, with few lenticels, forming a basal cone, 14 cm tall, 40 cm in diam. No. of leaves 7 + 1 juvenile. Leafsheath 85 cm long, encircling the stem for 42 cm thus forming a crownshaft. Crownshaft light green, glabrous, largest diam. 5.5 cm. The not encircling part of the leafsheath channeled. Petiole 30 cm long, green, cross-section nearly circular, diam. just below the basal pinna, 1.2 cm. Rachis 180 cm lon, green, adaxialy reverse V-shaped, striated, abaxially rounded. No. of pinnae 2 x 22. Pinnae green lightly falcate, adaxialy side with prominent veins. Pinnae in one plane, regularly distributed. In some leaves pinnae are inserted nearly opposite, in others pinnae are inserted with minor misplacements, making pinnae opposite in some areas and alternate in others. Basal pinnae 33 x 3.4 cm, central pinna 55 x 8 cm, apical pinna 19.5 x 3.2 cm. Inflorescences; old decaying buds at 1st and 2nd node below the crownshaft. Young buds are subtended by each leafsheath. No. of buds per node 10. The buds at each node are of different size, largest in the middle, becoming minor towards the sides. |
