Field notes Caespitose palm up to 165 cm, with 6 stems. Roots yellow to 0.3 cm in diam. with lenticells. Base of stem with young vegetative buds. Stem greenish-yellow, bamboo-like. Stem from base to lowermost leaf 103 cm. Diam. at base 0.7 cm. Diam. below lowermost leaf 0.5 cm. Number of internodes 19. Basalmost internode 5.7 cm, uppermost internode 3 cm. Nodes to 0.2 cm, clearly visible. No. of leaves 9 + 1 juvenile. leafsheet 10 cm long at base encirkling 2/3 of stem. Green with brown pubescens. Petiole 10 cm, straight concave, green. Diam. below lamina 0.2 cm. Lamina entire, bifid, 27 cm long and 11 cm broad. Adaxially green, glabrous, partly covered with lichens. Abaxially light-green, rachis and veins with brown pubescens. No. of inflorescences: 1, intrafoliar. Prophyl 4.5 cm long, brown, paperlike, decideous. First sheeting bract inserted 0.2 cm above the prophyl, 4.5 cm long, brown, paperlike and decideous. Peduncle 5.5 cm long, ovale, longest diameter below lowermost rachillae: 0.5 cm, green to red, rough. No. of rachillae 2. Longest rachillae: 15 cm, rough, green to red, largest diameter 0.4 cm. No. of flowerbuds 61. Buds regulary distributed in wheels of 3. According to Maximiliano Cox, Nueva rochafuerte, this species is called Penclo de monte - and it may be used for construction when numerous.
