| Field notes | Caespitose palm with 6 stems, to 8 meter tall. Stem erect, 17 cm long, diam. 12 cm, base with adventitous roots. Leaves 7; sheath + petiole 247 cm long, leafbases persistent, encircling the stem, rachis 375 cm long; pinnae 103-104 per side, regularly distributed except for minor displacements making pinnae opposite in some parts and alternate in others, green and glabrous above, with whitish pubescence below, margins with numerous black, to 0.4 cm long spines. Infructescence interfoliar, inserted 120 cm above the ground; peduncle 158 cm long, green with brownish pubescence, and black, flattened spines, to 1.7 cm long; prophyll bicarinate, 85 cm long, 8.5 cm wide; bract inserted 105 cm above the base of the peduncle, 97 cm long; rachis 25 cm long; rachillae about 60, very densely inserted. Immature fruits ovate, 5 x 3 cm, yellow with numerous black spines and a pointed apex. Endesperm liquid, said to be delicious. With alcohol-preserved material. |
