| Field notes | About 9 m tall solitary palm tree; stem greyish, stepped by old leaf bases. Leaves in crown 35-40, gradual transition into 10-15 marcescent pendent leaves; leaf base 50-60 cm long, yellow, split to the base, eventually breaking up in brown fibrous mesh; leaf petiole 240-260 cm long, with up to 2 cm long, basally swollen, slightly recurved, green to blackish spines, decreasing in size towards the base; leaf petiole approx. 4 cm wide at the base of the leaf blade; leaf blade cicular, 280 cm in diam., hastula eccentric, number of lobes 95-100, basal indentions approx. 70 cm long, middle ones approx. 90 cm long, apical ones approx. 60 cm long, blade with 1-3 wawes overall, lustrous dark green above, glaucous green below, upper part of petiole and major veins of the leaf covered by greyish woolly tomentum below. Tree with 5 infructescences branched to tird order. Prophyll bicarinate, brown; first peduncular bract 25 cm long, brown; peduncle 25 cm long; rachis approx. 1 m long; number of first order branches 5-6; basal first order branch naked for 50 cm, with approx. 25 second order branches; fruit bearing rachillae up to 37 cm long, orange brown with reddish tinge; each rachilla with up to 5 fruits. Fruit solitary with 0.5 cm long pedicel, 3 cm across, 2.6 cm long, glaucous green, lustrous, intrusion of the seed coat tree-like. |
