Field notes Solitary tree on terra firme slope. Adventitous roots few, base of trunk though moderately cone shaped. Stem 450 cm long, 6.5 cm (basally) to 5.5 cm (distally) wide, internodes +/- obscure basally to very short (0.5-1.5 cm) distally, lightbrown. Leaves 17 (+1 sword); leafbase 14 cm long, 14 cm wide at the base, smooth, yellow-green, margins fibrous; petiole 122 cm long, 2.8 cm (basally) to 1.8 cm (distally) wide, rounded below, flattened above, green, smooth: rachis 157 cm long. Blade 190 cm long, 85 cm wide, flat, obovate, apex bifid; pinnae 2 x 9, insertion reduplicate and in one plane, (67 x 4) cm basally, (78 x 10) cm in the middle, (51 x 11) cm at apex, striated, shining darkgreen above, lightgreen below. Inflorescences 4, interfoliar, borne at the bases of older leaves, prophyll persistent, 52 cm long, 3 cm wide basally, 5 cm wide in the middle, fibrous or actually disintegrating into fibers; peduncular bract 50 cm long, fibrous at the prophyll. NV: Ah-casta-yah-hai-chi (Cayapa).
