| Field notes | Solitary tree, 12.5 m tall, dbh: 22 cm. Stem armed with up to 10 cm long spines in bands between leaf-scars. Leaves 16, 3.6 x 2.4 m. Leaf-base heavily armed. Petiole 50 cm, with spines. Rachis armed with spines of different length. Pinna 2 x 92, reduplicate, inserted at different angles, unevenly distributed along the rachis, glossy dark green dorsally, whitish dewed ventrally, midnerve yellow. Inflorescences 7, interfoliar. Peduncle heavily armed, 1.3 m long, a scar present between pedunle and rachis from a sterile bract. Rachis 90 cm, 1st order branches ca. 150, 10-15 xm long. Rachis and branches without spines. Male flowers seen aggregated distally on 1st order branches. Fruits basally on floral branches, orange felted. Use: for making fibres, used in hammocks, rope, baskets etc., according to Manuel José, a farm boy. Dupl. AAU, QCA, QCNE. |
