| Field notes | Solitary tree, 17 m tall. DBH: 40 cm. Stiltroots numerous, >40, 2 m high, 5 cm in diam., smooth, greyish/brown from lichens, prickly enticels. Stem not liftet above the ground. Trunk smooth, greyish, swollen on the middle part of juvenile specimens. Dist. between leafscars: from 25 cm basally to 35 cm distally. Crownshaft 1.0 m, smooth, dark-green. Leaves 6, dim. (5.5 x 2.4)m. No of pinnae: 2 x 17, inserted reduplicate and different at angles on the rachis, pinnae dark-green dorsally, green ventrally, midnerve yellowish green. Inflorescence infrafoliar. Bracts many (c. 10)- only scars seen. Mature inflorescences found up to 3 m from the crownshaft. Approaching the crownshaft younger and younger inflorescences can be found. Peduncle (20 x 10)cm ferruginous filted and green. Rachis 25 cm, 1st order branches spicate, yellow. 70 branches (some branches bear 2nd order branches). Fruit yellowish. Ants and bees observed in the inflorescence. Use: Posts for housebuilding. NV: Pambil (Spanish). |
