| Field notes | Caespitose, stems in groups of 3-5, 14 m tall, dbh. 13 cm. Stem grey and heavily armed with greyish-white, 3-5 cm long spines, grey, spines in bands between leaf-scars. Distance between leaf-scars at the base 20 cm. This distance decreasing distally. Leaves 6, a short sword is present. Petiole 0.5 m long, glossy brown dorsally. Pinnae 2 x 125 (leaflets split up to the base). Inflorescence interfoliar, borne between the persistent bases of the older leaves, old leaves persistent ca. 1 m below the green ones. Bracts 50 cm long, spatulate; with 1 cm long, brown spines, texture fibrous. Peduncle 10 cm long, rachis 20 cm. Peduncle ferruginously felted, rachis green. Spicate 1st order rachillae. Fruits green. Use: Fruits edible, but rarely seen ripe in this area, because some flies feed on them. The outer layer of the stem is used for floors, the inner part is soft and removed. |
