Field notes Solitary tree. Stem short. Old leaf-bases persistent, splitting up in thick fibres, embedded in woolly material. Leaves five, to 11 m long. Petiole 2.5 m long. Pinnae 2 x 89, 120 x 9, lower surface white, dewy, reduplicate. Specimen sterile. Use: The palm heart ("palmito") is eaten, the thick fibres from the leaf-bases are used as arrows for blowguns, according to Adam (coaiquer).
