Identification qualifier  
Field notes Solitary dioecious palmtree 18 m tall. DBH 15 cm. Stem glabrous, greyish brown. Internodes 5-7 cm. Stiltroots 15-20, dark brown, 50-100 cm long, covered with spiny lentiscels, forming a cone. Crownshaft 1.90 m long, green to greenish brown. Leafbases persistent and fibrous, below crownshaft. Unfolded spearshaped leaf 3 m long. Leaves 3, pinnately divided, elliptic in outline, 3 X 2 m. Petiole 30 cm long, 3 cm in diam, green, glabrous. Rachis with dense ferrugineous pubescence. Pinnae ca 55, oblique spatulate to linear. Margin erose to grossly dentate towards the apex on distal side, entire on proximal side. Inflorescence interfoliar. Prophyll caducuous. Peduncle 10 cm with 7-10 sterile bracts. First order branches of inflorescence. spicate. Flowers pistillate. Photos of Inflorescence, mature leaf, unfolded spearshaped leaf. Nom vern.: "Gualte" (Quichua) Use: Timber. Outer fibrous layers of stem used for making walls, floor pillars etc in traditionel stilt huts.
