Field notes Solitary palmtree, basally with 36 light brown stiltroots, each about 3 cm in diam., lentiscels white and spiny. Stem about 26 m tall, not armed, covered by light gray crustaceous lichens,15 cm in diam. basally and 10 cm in diam below crownshaft. Number of leaves 8, spreading and reflexed. Crownshaft 1.50 m long and 15 cm in diam. at the base. Leaf sheath 1.60 m long, dark green, with entire margin. Petiole 10 cm long. Blade 3.10 m long and 1.90 m in width. Number of pinnae 2 X 49, wedge-shaped, opposite proximally alternate distally, dark green above (adaxially) and light green below (abaxially). . Monoecious. Infructescence composed of colbae,15 cm long and 6 cm in diam. Fruits covered with reddish-brown pubescence. Nom. vern.: Yan-a!-chi (Cayapa), Gualte (Castellano) Use: the seeds of the ripe fruits are eaten. The trunk is considered a valuable timber.
